The Daily Work Behind a Strong Marriage

Marriage Takes Place after the Wedding

The first thing that comes to mind when one thinks about marriage is probably all of the events that are part of the wedding journey; i.e., the proposal, the engagement, and the wedding itself. And certainly those are important—but they’re not what a marriage ultimately hangs on for 50 years. Marriage is not automatic, but it is like a process and both the persons involved in the marriage need to put effort to make it successful. It can’t do that.  Just like any other valued thing, marriage needs constant nurturing and attention. This means that marriage is not formed during one day of the wedding. Rather, it takes place on many days that will follow.

Communication Involves Much More Than Words

One of the most important behaviors of any good marriage is that of proper communication. Most people tend to think of communication as only talking, but it goes beyond saying words and sharing one’s thoughts.

There are going to be times when there are some misunderstandings. There are going to be some differences of opinion, frustrations and even a time when there are two sides to something. At such times, what one needs to do is not try and prove who is right and who is wrong.

Good couples foster an atmosphere where one can openly talk and discuss issues with one another without getting into any judgments or criticism. It involves asking questions and trying to listen.

Small Things Make Big Differences in a Relationship

Most people think that a loving relationship is based on the grand gestures that they’ve heard about or that they’ve experienced in their lives.  While these things are certainly important, the fact is that the majority of successful relationships are created by a combination of small things.  Small actions can have large impacts on building & sustaining a loving, healthy relationship. Something like saying something nice before leaving for work. Or sending a text message throughout the day to see how your spouse is doing. Telling her that she looks beautiful in a shirt. Just spending some time and asking about your partner’s day. Expressing your appreciation for little things.

Respect Needs To Stay Consistent

Any relationship will be subjected to various trials. A multitude of factors – finances; family; careers; health concerns; unforeseen circumstances – can create tension between couples during tough times. In these moments, maintaining respect becomes extremely important.

Respect cannot be viewed as just showing courtesy. Respect entails the dignified treatment of the spouse even during heated situations. It means speaking to one another during the argument without using words that can hurt. It means not putting each other down during frustrating moments.

Many things can be tolerated in a relationship where there is respect.

Helping Each Other When Seasons Change

Life is filled with changes, and marriage is also affected by those changes. What is needed by a newly wedded couple differs greatly from what a couple with children requires. Similarly, what is required of a couple in their career-building years is different from what they require later on in life.

A good marriage learns how to adapt and change with these changes together. They realize that there are times in life when a person needs to receive more than he gives in marriage. This is usually when things at work become challenging, there are health concerns, and other unforeseen circumstances that bring a lot of stress into marriage. It is at such times that marriage moves away from convenience and towards true partnership.

Working together, or helping each other through these different changes, will strengthen your marriage and allow both partners to feel they are not going through life’s difficulties alone.

Choosing Each Other Everyday

One of the biggest misconceptions about marriage is that commitment doesn’t happen just once in marriage but everyday.

Everyday choices play a significant role in marriage. The couple can make choices everyday either to nurture their relationship or ignore it. Those couples who are able to cultivate lifelong marriages know that commitment isn’t simply an emotional issue. Commitment is a choice that needs to be made in practice.

Sometimes things would go smoothly while sometimes the couple would find themselves stressed out and tired. Either way, committed couples keep on choosing each other every day.

Building Something That Will Last

It takes more than luck to create a good marriage. It takes an effort on the part of two individuals who know the significance of what they are constructing. Communication, respect, patience, appreciation, and commitment should not be intermittent acts. Rather, they should become habits which the couple practices diligently.

Great marriages are not created through the lack of any problems. It is achieved through the willingness of both parties to continue growing together and not growing apart. Daily investment in marriage creates a bond that becomes stronger with time.

In conclusion, marriage is not built upon wedding vows, titles, or even feelings alone. It is built upon the dedication of two individuals to continue showing up for each other and working towards creating a life together. This dedication does not have to be glamorous; it could be the most crucial ingredient in a marriage that endures.
